Securing the supply of natural gas: bayernets begins with constructing the compressor station Wertingen

Munich, 20 September 2017. - bayernets GmbH will begin construction works to erect the compressor station Wertingen in the area of Prettelshofen (in the district of Dillingen an der Donau) on 25 September 2017. The compressor station Wertingen will be located at an connection point where the already existing gas pipelines “Nordumgehung” (i.e. Amerdingen-Wertingen-Anwalting-Finsing) and CEL (Vohburg-Wertingen-Senden) connect. Building permission was granted in the spring of 2017. For 2018, it is planned to erect the compressor building that houses the compressor units. The installation of the compressor units themselves and the completion of the mechanical works will follow in 2019 and commissioning is planned for the end of 2019.

As a transmission system operator bayernets GmbH is actively involved in the further development of the natural gas transmission system in Germany based on the needs of the market. The compressor station Wertingen is an integral part of the Network Development Plan Gas and will secure the future supply of gas shipping capacity in the network area of bayernets and in adjacent network areas. bayernets GmbH thereby will enable shippers and regional suppliers to meet the demand for natural gas in Southern Germany. The compressor station Wertingen will provide increased shipping capacity between the transmission system operators Open Grid Europe GmbH, terranets bw GmbH and bayernets as well as the Austrian underground storage facilities 7Fields and Haidach.

“With the compressor station Wertingen, bayernets GmbH and Open Grid Europe GmbH are making an important contribution to the security of supply in Southern Germany”, explains Rainer Dumke, Managing Director of bayernets GmbH. The compressor station comprises three compressor units and will have a system capacity of 11 megawatts per compressor unit respectively. The transmission system operator bayernets GmbH and Open Grid Europe will have invested 107 million euros by 2019, bayernets’ share amounting to 55 percent and Open Grid Europe GmbH’s amounting to 45 percent. Both companies are shareholders in the gas pipeline “Nordumgehung”.

Firstly, road access to the construction site will be prepared. At the site, both a service building and a compressor building will be erected. Office and workshop facilities will be set up next to the construction site for the duration of the construction works.
